When it comes to great design, the superpower nations are well known. But this year’s London Design Festival has gathered exhibitors, designers and ideas from beyond the established hotspots of Italy, Spain, Japan and Holland. Becky Sunshine highlights today’s emerging design nations and where to see them during the festival.
USA
It has been a while since the US was considered a major force in product and furniture design, but with quite a presence at the festival, it seems to be bouncing back. And about time, too. The American furniture company Bernhardt Design will present new work by the young American Brad Ascalon as well as pieces by its roster of international designers including Monica Förster, Jephson Robb, Suzanne Trocmé and Jaime Hayón, at Brands, 99 St Johns Street, EC. The Italian brand Skitsch is launching Home, a storage system by the brilliant New York designer Harry Allen. The design borrows its shape from a traditional house, but rooms and garden become storage and display. It can be arranged and rearranged in countless formations. For its launch, Allen has created an installation at the Skitsch showroom, 270 Brompton Road, SW3 . Another New Yorker in London for the festival is the furniture designer Sang Hoon Kim , who is presenting his new work Phenomena at 100% Design, Earls Court, September 23-26 . The range includes an architectural, organic-shaped room divider and table, both in wood, which explore the way light and shadows are reflected and refracted. A slightly off-beat sounding show is Gastrotypographicalassemblage: The Designs of Lou Dorfsman. Held at the Kemistry Gallery in Fitzrovia, the exhibition celebrates the 40 years’ worth of Dorfsman’s graphic design work for the American television network CBS. Until October 30 at 43 Charlotte Street, EC2 .
